Hi Kevin,
I just stumbled over your posting and the Name Change. I have a similar case in my Family. The husband of my godmother is an Immigrant from Albania. When he arrived at Ellis Island in 1908 he gave his real albanian Name: Faik Shyti. The Immigration officer said, he couldn't keep this Name in the United States as nobody could spell it. He was renamed to Frank Muarem, Muarem being his middle Name in Albania. Luckily Franks son is still alive and my Cousin. He told me the story and he thinks he is the only carrier of the name Muarem worldwide.
Now if you talk with some selfnamed experts, they tell you, that this was not possible, as it was against the rules. My example shows, that there are always exceptions to the rules. Maybe your relative was renamed as well at immigration. To rename yourself just because your name sounds German is not logical to me as Rinas doesn't sound German.
Gerhard
