Thanks Debbie. Yes the manifest is a bit hard to read but the relationship actually says "brother". Underneath it his wife has relationship listed as "brother-in-law". I will email you a better copy.

I believe the community at Steinbach, Manitoba were all protestant Germans, but on the entry form into Canada, my grandfather and his wife were listed as Roman Catholic. I have been told that was probably a mistake, but it has to be considered. My grandfather was very closed off about his background and he never spoke of where he came from or about his family in Russia really. By 1920 when he became a citizen he was no longer married to the woman he crossed with. We don't know why.
