I have seen quite a number of references in German/Russian genealogy sites to the surname Mannes. That seems to be a fairly common name that could easily be interpreted as Manos, although it would depend on where the misspelling or misinterpretation actually took place. Nobody entered Ellis Island under the name Rudolf or Rudolph Mannes either, so that's of limited help even if that is the correct name.
