May I add another bit of information.
My maternal Oma's brother, Adolf Baier, served in the Russian Army during the First World War, yet his parents and siblings and their families were all deported to Siberia (Chelabynsk region). Adolf died of injuries during the war. My Opa had been in the Russian Navy, but seems to have returned home before the deportation. I am not sure why except that his mother was a widow and his next younger brother died young, so it is possible that he was demobilised to assist her. I have read also that, if German families had sons serving in the military, they were able to remain on their land, but it wasn't long before they too were deported as the Russians were suspicious of their loyalty. The Baier family were supposed to have been Bug Hollander in the Mazeowicki area and migrated to josephin, then Friedrichsdorf (Solomka/Rowno, in Volhynia in the 1860s. In my family's case (Bethke and Baier), they left in July 1915 by train from Kiev and returned in the spring of 1918 after the Revolution.
In the case of my father's family (JKukasch and Koenig) from Berestowiec/Kostopol, most were deported to Kazachstan and I only know this because the EWZ Stammblaetter gave some birth information for children who were born there.
