Today I was cleaning up some maps that I had packed in boxes. My eyes accidentally came across the place name KOSCHIN in Posen. It is located about half way between the towns of Posen and Gnesen.

There were many Germans from Posen in Volhynia. Since your ancestor claimed that he was born in Germany (and Posen was in Germany at that time) perhaps this is the place of birth. Perhaps Koshyn = Koschin.

Again, this is only a guess but it seems to fit the story.
