Good morning Irene. I agree that "Stary" would usually refer to something "old". In Poland, one can find such places as Starynia and Starzyna so it seems that it could be accurate. That was my original thought as well but when I could not find anything like that, I turned to other possibilities.
I also agree that "Szcz" would most accurately be transliterated as "Scht". However, one can refer to the city of Szczecin and its most common transliteration of Stettin to see that what should be is not always the way it is done.
I only have a Polish map for this part of Volhynia dated 1923 and 1:100,000 scale. A German Truppenkarte might show a place transliterated as Staryna but I have not found a Truppenkarte for this region.
