The search is absolutely free but you must register to use the site. If you search directly on the Ellis Island site, you must have an exact spelling or you will not find the person. The best place to start is http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html. Here you can use different formats to find the name but you will still need to register. For example, from this link you can do a "sounds like" search so for Schultz, it will also give results for Schulz, Schulze usw.

Marital Status: S = single, not married

Important: The information typed out is an extraction and therefore often includes mistakes in place, spelling, usw. ALWAYS click on "View Original Manifest" to see a copy of the original record. Here you will find the correct information as originally written, and often more information such as a place of birth, where a relative lives, usw. Also, when an original page comes up, you might have to go to the page before or the page after to see the name. Some records have only one page while others have two pages. Sometimes the pages were filmed in reverse order so that page 541 might be before page 540 for example.
