Can you help me locate Novorovka?
Krzysztof Muchorowski, Sonntag, 19.02.2006, 23:20 (vor 7351 Tagen)
Hi everybody,
I am looking for a village in Volhynia named 'Novorovka'. My wife's grandma was born there in a German family Scheide in 1925. After WWII, she settled in Central Poland. We would like to find this place, but cannot find on present day maps of Ukraine.
Perhaps a kind soul may help us?
Best regards from Warsaw,
Krzysztof

Hi Krzysztof
Try the site: http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm, which has Austrian maps produced before 1925.
Was Novorovka near a larger town or city? It will help narrow your search if it was. There are also maps to be found at http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/topo.html, which has Russian maps produced around the 1980s (but I'm not entirely sure about the date).
Google Earth might be helpful, as can map sites like www.mapquest.com. I was able to confirm that a village I'm interested in is still around today.
Good luck

I am looking for a village in Volhynia named 'Novorovka'.
Do you have a document? Can it be for example Neborovka? Located near Zhitomir - some miles in the West of this town.

Hi,
Yes, I have Grandma's Polish naturalization documents, and they have 'Novorovka' as here birth place. As they must have been created from Soviet documents, I guess that the name is fine. Indeed, Neborovka looks very similar, but for time being - I have no reason to disbelief the documents.

I understand your reason not to doubt since these are official documents probably translated by someone familiar with both languages. However, the Cyrillic character that looks like a B is transliterated to the Roman script V. The Cyrillic character similar to b is transliterated as Roman script B. It is therefore easy enough to make a mistake if you are not careful in how you read the text. I have seen, for example, where official maps confuse the spelling between Barbarowka and Warwarowka. It would therefore seem plausible that your Novorovka could be Neborovka.
Certainly we can not guarantee this is correct but since it appears that there is no such known place as Novorovka, you should give it serious consideration.

Hello Krzysztof,
we know that village names changed very often within some years. I had a look at the 1906 Russian village lists and did find д. Неборовка [village Neborowka], Wolost Pulin and кол. Невяровка [colony Newjarowka], Wolost Goroschki (= Wolodarsk). The last one located 6 Werst from Goroschki and 43 Werst from Zhitomir. I can't find it on any map.
My wife's grandma was born there in a German family Scheide ...
There are a few SCHEIDE listed in the War Records of the Odessa Digital Library, one of them from Newerowka: RISTAU, Natalie neé SCHEIDE, born in Newerowka. Other SCHEIDE families lived in Fedorowka with is just in the neighborhood (5 Werst from Goroschki).

Correction: I DID find Newerowka on the Berkeley map http://sunsite.berkeley.edu:8085/x-ussr/100k/M-35-058.jpg (you'll find it on the left side). Also http://sunsite.berkeley.edu:8085/x-ussr/100k/M-35-057.jpg which shows Wolodarsk Wolynskij.

Hello Gerhard,
You are very helpful, indeed, thank you very much!
I have looked at maps (those Austrian maps at http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/digkonyv/topo/3felmeres.htm and the ones that you mention) and I see, that indeed - there are quite a lot of name changes. Although Neverovka or Nevjarovka is on the map from 1980s, it is not on the old map from 1910. Also, the village of Federovka is there no more, there is a village of Kalinovka instead. Probably this name was changed after WWII. However, other names on this Austrian map strongly suggest German villages (like Niemieckija Chutora). Perhaps this Nevjarovka was just so small that it was not listed there.
The fact that the family Scheide is mentioned only in the vicinity of this place probably points in the right direction.
Best regards,
Krzysztof
