I'm sorry I don't have an answer to your questions, but I can say that my (probably Lutheran) grandfather was from Wolhynia (probably near Novograd-Wolynsk), and one time we had guests including my mother's aunt by marriage, who was Jewish. My grandfather opened up and told all sorts of stories that evening. Later my dad said he had never seen his father so talkative. This made me think that wherever my grandfather was from, there must have been Jews, and he was quite comfortable with them.
