Looking for "Katz" - Wolhynien-Forum

In a search of the Ellis Island USA records I found that my Great Grand Father listed WOLHYNIEN as his last town of residence. In an internet search, I came across this website. I am sorry, but I do not speak German, and will need assistance for translation. However, I am looking for anyone who might have had a relationship with a Leiser Katz born circa 1869 or his brother Hersch Katz, born circa 1876.
Additionally, anyone who speaks English can assist by informing me more about the town, and this website.

Unfortunately for you, Wolhynien is not a town but rather a province in former Russia. Today it is the northern part of Ukraine from a short distance west of Kiev all the way over to the border with Poland. In English, it is referred to a VOLHYNIA.

Judging by the sound of your names, you ancestry appears to be Jewish. Ideally you will still need to get an actual place name because Volhynia was such a large region. A good place to continue your search would be http://www.jewishgen.org which has some good Volhynian resources.

Your inquiry regarding your ancestors Leiser Katz and Hersch Katz is somewhat difficult to me because of Jewish names. But at first you should try to search through some online libraries.

Just to clarify Bjorn's posting - Though in English, the Odessa site is primarily for Germans with origins in modern day Ukraine and especially focusing on the Black Sea area. There are some German Lutheran records for Volhynia with some material for other regions as well. There would be little if any resources for Jewish research.

Frank is absolutely right. But at times you can of course find some minor details in the Odessa library. Especially the "Ship and Immigration data" could give some hints, e.g.:

GR Passengers in GRHS Publications (A. Brosz)
Shipno Name Age From Destination

But in general Frank is absolutely right to focus on resources for Jewish research.
