KNOLL family

Ron Knoll (per Email) @, Montag, 20.03.2017, 01:21 (vor 2798 Tagen)

Hello

My grandfather, Friedrich Knoll, was born in Volynia on February 4, 1892. He emigrated to Canada in 1912, apparently leaving by ship out of Bremen on May 18, 1912, accompanied by his parents, a brother and two sisters. His father’s name was Adam Knoll (born 1862).

Unfortunately that is about all we know about that branch of our family. We would love to learn more and are looking for any information or resources that could help us.

My understanding is that Volynia now covers parts of modern day Ukraine and Poland. We don’t know what part of Volynia or what town/village they may have come from. ... Any information or assistance you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Ron Knoll

Hello Ron,

Your grandfather Friedrich was born in the western part of Volhynia, in a small village called Myszyn which, it seems, doesn't exist anymore. It was situated about 10 miles west of Luzk, 2 miles NW of Oderady.

In those days, the village was part of the Rozyszcze Parish. Most of the church books are online!

It was not that difficult to find the birth record of your grandfather (written in Russian):

~ 9 Feb 1892 in Adamow-Oderady
son of Adam KNULL and his wife Emilia nee JAHNS

Other children of Adam and Emilia in the database:

Adam KNOLL and Emilie JAHNS got married in Rozyszcze on 10 Jan 1884. The record is written in German and you should be able to read it. Let me know if you need some help.

It says that Adam was born in Dziepulc, Gouvernement of Petrikau. I had a look at the church book of Dziepółć and found him in the 1863 book. He was born in Babczów. That it does not get boring, this one is written in Polish. I'm too tired to translate it now and, who know's, maybe are you fluent in Polish?

This is incredible information Irene. I can’t thank you enough and I am amazed at how quickly you were able to find it.

No one in our family speaks or reads Polish or Russian. I can read a bit of German (often have to use an on-line translator) but have great difficulty reading anything that is hand written, as everything was in those days. If you have the time and inclination, any other translations you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

I’m also curious about the spelling change from Knull to Knoll. I’m wondering if Knull was a Russian spelling or what the reason for the change might be.

Thank you so much. This is very exciting – I’m forwarding your email to my siblings and cousins.

Hello Ron,

Please, do not contact me via email, use the forum instead. Other people researching the KNOLL/KNULL name might benefit from our conversation.

But I would like to point out that writing in English is difficult and time consuming for me, so, it migt be a good idea to join the SGGEE mailing list and maybe consider a membership. The Society for German Genealogy in Eastern Europe focuses on the genealogy of Germans from Russian Poland and Volhynia. Just what you need.

Right now, I do not have time for the translation, will do it later or tomorrow.
