Stremel/Muller

Maria Mikolics @, Samstag, 31.07.2004, 08:07 (vor 7808 Tagen)

I have a copy of Martha Stremel's birth certificate (sister of my grandmother Emmi) which I believe was issued in Shitomir (Zhytomyr) - DOB 8 September 1906 - Lutheran. Martha's parents were Alwine Muller and Lorenz Stremel and in addition to sister Emmi, she had two brothers, Robert and Ferdinand. The family emigrated to Prussia.
I am seeking information on what happened to any family they left behind.
Can you help?

Are you sure about the birth place of Martha Stremel? In the town Shitomir was the seat of the Lutheran parish located. In the documents we could read very often "born in Shitomir" and it means the parish only. The name of the village where she lived is missing.

Hello Gerhad
Yes, we think it is actually the parish of Shitomir. As far as we can tell from the document the village is something like Thseremoschnja, but I can't find anything that resembles this. Do you have any ideas?

That would be Tschermoschna located about 20 km NW of Zhitomir. This is a short distance north of the highway between Zhitomir and Nowograd Wolhynsk.

Go to http://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/x-ussr/ukraine.html and click on Zhitomir, then #57. Enlarge the resulting map if necessary.

Go to the lower right, intersection of vertical line 00 and horizontal 82. That is the village, right on the rail line.

I see from your email address that you are in Australia. Did your ancestors flee Russia by way of Harbin, China? SGGEE http://www.sggee.org has a member in Australia whose Volhynian ancestors fled that way. He attended one of our conventions here in Canada a few years ago. If you'd like to contact someone locally (I think he has had some success with his search), I will send you his email address privately.

Hello Maria,

in the list of the former landowners you can find two entries from the village Tschermoschna = Sheremoschnja. Please compare our webpages here http://www.wolhynien.de/1913.htm. It can be that your members of the family can remember the name ARNDT. Two persons of the ARNDT family are written in the list.

If you can understand or read the German language I can recommend this book of Nikolaus ARNDT (leader of the Historical society for Volhynia in Germany): Die Shitomirer Arndts. Eine Familienchronik auf dem Hintergrund der 150jährigen Geschichte der westlichen Ukraine. Würzburg: Holzner, 1970. You can order the book with a fax to this number: +49 (0)9383 6110 or with an email to Mr. Arndt. Please try to write in German. His adress you can read here: http://www.wolhynien.de/links2.htm.
