It may be worth to find out if some of your Kunkel relatives moved back to Germany during WWII. This information can be found in the Berlin Document Center collection. It is made up of the EWZ (Einwandererzentralstelle - Central Immigration Office) applications for ethnic Germans who were living in eastern Europe and wished to emmigrate back to Germany under the nonaggression pact. The EWZ files are located at National Archives II at College Park.

You will find a description of these documents on Dave Obee`s web site http://members.home.net/daveobee/ewzmain.html
and under http://www.odessa3.org/collections/war/ewz/
