Dear Gerhard, Dear visitors,

It is my solemn, yet also affirmative duty, to advise that my mother, Anita Maria Makarewitsch, died in her sleep in the early hours of Friday, 14 May, 2021, whilst in the compassionate and dutiful care of staff at the Percy Baxter Lodges aged care home, Geelong, Australia.

She ceased her mortal life free of pain and stress, with her hands clasped together as in the act of being in prayer.

With her at the time she breathed her last were her son Andreas and her two only granddaughters Jessica and Melissa.

God has granted Anita her wish. Endlich, as she would have said.

Unfortunately, Anita never got to see the photo but she was comfortable in its creation, taken on Sunday afternoon, 09 May, 2021.

We grieve, yet, faith and trust in God inspires us and provides comfort in the knowledge that Anita has joined her husband Boris and parents and all the fraternity of ancestors from both sides.

It's risky reading things into how a photograph presents its subject but here goes, submitted for discussion and comment:

I consider it significant and symbolic how Martin's tunic in his right breast area contains a fold which obscures details of the military emblem. Even at a large magnification of an image of large size, try as I might but I fail to discern a clear depiction of the insignia, especially of the lower circular area intended to show the cross. It's there but there's something smudged or distorted about it.

The following info about Martin Kersten is offered, but I stress it is uncorroborated.

During a visit to Hamburg, Germany in early 2013 I visited numerous cousins. One such stay was at my late cousin Juergen's apartment, where he lived with his partner Hartmut.

Juergen Kierdorf:

Geb. 15 Oktober 1951, gess. January 2013.
Younger son to Elisabeth, geb. Kersten and Hugo Kierdorf, geb. Feb. 1908, gess. Oktober, late 1980s- to be confirmed.)
Younger brother to Siegfried Kersten, geb. May 1940 to Elisabeth Kersten.

In Juergen's apartment was a calendar hanging on the back of a door. I took some photos of it, then forgot about it. It has now become a valuable reference.

Juergen was a methodical person and also possessed a most considerate manner. He was respected for his expertise working with people, especially as a 'Pflegedienstleiter'. He worked with young people suffering from depression.

A calendar entry for 18 August reads 'Martin gess. 1943.'
A calendar entry for 15 August reads 'Elli u. Papa 1956.'

I intend contacting the surviving clan in due course to elicit details which may have relevance here.

As I peruse the deeper pockets of this website, it's timely to express deep thanks for all the work which has gone into it. Thank you.

It's well over overdue to give something back to all who are benefiting from your dedicated work. 'Work'? I sure hope there's some satisfaction and enjoyment in there too!

I may have more photos to contribute as I'm sorting through boxes from Anita- they ended up in my flat when she moved to residential aged care in Feb. 2018. [Alten heim.]

There is alas also some urgency in my endeavors: Anita hasn't been too well over recent weeks and there have been moments where I feared the worst: get that eulogy prepared. I said to her on Saturday, 'Ich schreibe ein Bio euber dich.' She looked at me, had a think for a second or two, then replied, rather dryly and with just a hint of a wicked smirk on her lips, 'Wieso ein Bio euber mich? Was wirst damit tuen (machen?)- Wirst es verkaufen ..??'

Um, I'm not often lost for words but this time I was ... stumm! And then she started telling stories, egged on by my questions. Esp. regarding Martin.

She speaks often of her father. I simply wish to avoid taking up too much space here.

I apologise to visitors who can't read German, as I'm writing all this in English. No doubt Google Translate will come to the rescue.

In discussions recently with my mother Anita about this website and its wealth of info regarding our ancestor Pastor Rudolf, I prompted her as to the vague details regarding brother Martin's demise in WWII: #4 ... Killed in the war.

I offer the following story in all humility and with a profound sense of sadness and loss- expressed here because Anita had to think about this for about, oh a second, before proceeding-in other words, her narrative was unfaltering and crystal clear. It was told me by her in person on Saturday evening, 10 April, 2021:

Martin was in a parade when the order was given for all who were Christian- all who espoused Chrstian values? were to step forward. he did so- so did others. He was subsequently shot. By the Wehrmacht? I did not ask.

As in instances like this, the story beckons further research and more questions and I am cognoscente of the sensitive and maybe even controversial nature of the theme.

It was 1943 and Anita was studying and working to become a nurse. I'm still unclear where she lived at the the time- i.e. at home. She is clear, that Rudolf did receive the true version of Martin's death and its manner.

Over the last two days I have been furiously reading and researching as to what extent the Nazis eliminated members of their own armed forces for holding religious, esp. Christian, beliefs. Wiki has helped: e.g. The Confessing Church.

Ilse Gilde died on 15 October, 2010 in Plau am See.
Rudolf's daughter Christa was married to Alfred Schulz.
He died in Langenfeld on 12 February, 1977.

Genau so ist es. Tut mir leid, wenn ich für Verwirrung gesorgt habe. Gerhard sammelt alles mögliche Material für die Forschungsstelle Wolhynien (der AGoFF). Ist ja auch gut, wenn so etwas zentral geschieht und unter dem Dach einer Organisation. Meine Reaktion an Dich betraf eigentlich den Aspekt, ob Du etwas von dem Material im Internet sehen möchtest auf wolhynien.de, denn in dem Fall bekommst Du es direkt mit mir zu tun, da ich das umsetze in HTML und CSS und außerdem noch das Urheberrecht im Auge behalten muß. Das Material bekomme ich dann von Gerhard, meist schon schön aufbereitet für's Web . Um solche Details brauchst Du Dich nicht zu kümmern, da die Teamarbeit bei uns ganz gut funktioniert. Und wenn das jetzt alles komplizierter klang, als es ist - laß es einfach auf Dich zukommen.

2. Bericht aus dem Heimatboten /(1965?)
Die ersten 5 Folgen des Berichtes aus dem "Heimatboten" von Pastor Rudolf Kersten über seine 50 Amtsjahre betreffen sein Wirken nach dem 1. Weltkrieg beim Wiederaufbau des kirchlichen Lebens im Kirchspiels Rozyszcze. Pastor R. Kersten hat von 1921-1924 in Rozyszcze amtiert.

Das Material ist sehr interessant . Ich habe es bei seiner Tochter aus seinem Nachlaß kopieren dürfen und es liegt mir am Herzen, es für alle zugänglich zu machen, insbesondere die PERSONEN auf den Bildern
zu i d e n t i f i z i e r e n.
