And so perhaps Carl Otto migrated from Pomerania to Volhynia but his wife refused to come with him. He therefore started a new family with Ernestine Hoeppner. Perhaps sometime before 1873, he received word that his wife had died so he was now free to marry Ernestine.

It is a very unusual situation but it seems this is the only probable explanation.

in dem Geburtseintrag Nr. 157 in den Zweitschriften von Schitomir 1864 S.21 sind beide Begriffe zu finden. Links beim Namen des Kindes OTTO, Martin Jacob ist senkrecht "unehelich" vermerkt und bei der Mutter "Jungfrau". Beim Vater steht "Ehemann". Somit ist er verheiratet, aber nicht mit der Mutter.

Offensichtlich ist es eine bekannte Beziehung, da - wie Du schreibst - Kinder einige Jahre zuvor bereits geboren wurden. Höchstwahrscheinlich war die Mutter am Hof von Carl OTTO als Dienstmädchen angestellt.

In dem Eintrag von 1845 steht beim Vater "verheirateter Kolonist" und bei der Mutter "Kolonistenmädchen" geschrieben.

"Jungfrau" heißt hier "nicht verheiratet".

Jungfrau bezeichnete eine junge Frau, die noch keinen GV mit einem Mann hatte.

I have seen many unehlich records in the St. Petersburg database but only one where the Jungfrau term is used several times.

Hier handelt es sich nicht mehr um Frauen, die "jungfräulich" waren. Entweder waren sie schon einmal verheiratet oder haben bereits ein Kind geboren.

Ursprüngliche Bedeutung aus dem "Altdeutschen Adel", da wurden die unverheiraten Mädchen "Jungfer" genannt. Daraus entwickelte die bis in die Mitte des 20. Jahrhunderts in Deutschland gebräuchliche Bezeichnung "Alte Jungfer; damit wurde eine ledige Frau bezeichnet, die keinen Mann "abgekriegt" hatte.

Es scheint, dass auch die Pastoren der damaligen Zeit mit der Terminologie "Jungfrau" und "unehelich" etwas durcheinander gekommen sind.

Carl Otto and "Jungfrau" Ernestine Hoeppner have a child in 1842.

In 1845 they have another child but there is no reference to either term.

In 1864 they have a third child where Ernestine is again shown as a Jungfrau. (If anyone looks this up, the extraction shows two children, Martin and Jacob born that year but the original shows this is only one child, Martin Jacob.)

The couple finally gets married in 1873.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this situation might have happened? Is there a reason for the Pastor to use Jungfrau in a certain context rather than unehlich?
